I'm having trouble tracking down Global Warming by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 11:56:17 AM EST
deniers at another site I frequent.

I went through 5 air conditioner implacements this weekend, tried to fix a broken one, bought a new one, and may move the new one as it's creating interference with our satellite dish.

Interference? by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #2 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 12:23:23 PM EST
Hmmm. I thought AC units had to meet specs that prevented electrical interference.

I'll do some more testing tonight.

I'm thinking of wrapping the whole thing in flashing to see if the interference goes away.

In all fairness by theboz (4.00 / 1) #10 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 01:23:47 PM EST
Now, I'm obviously not one of those flat-earther anti-science people that deny manmade climate change is real.  However, just as I scold those people whenever they get a day of cold and smugly say "See?  There is no global warming!" the same applies to this.  A hot day, a hot week, a hot month, or a hot year is not enough.  You have to look at at least decades, often longer, to be able to see the trend.  Obviously, the heat being experienced up there can possibly be attributed to climate change, but it could have happened without it too.

Propped up by idjits on either side. The terms are used somewhat interchangeably, and with addition of phrases like "over time" and "long term" it's easy to tell which is which.

weather != climate

I can't answer for what words the popular press or whatnot decides to use. The fact remains they are not the same thing and the terms are not interchangeable. Not even with qualifiers.

I'm aware of the fact that climate and weather are two different things, although they are related.  Global climate change does impact the weather, obviously.  It's just that too many stupid people attribute individual short term weather trends with climate change.  Of course, you could be just agreeing with what I previously said and putting it in simpler terms.

I saw something recently by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #19 Tue Jun 10, 2008 at 10:29:32 AM EST
that said the average amount of vegetation per acre across the whole planet has been going up dramatically over the past few decades. (true fact).

Thus, global warming has clearly been caused by the increase in green plants which absorb the light instead of reflecting back into space.

back when i worked at a crappy place, the server room was 140F by the time they discovered the a/c was broken.

servers were fried.

best part: the dude who ended up being my boss was in charge of backups, but he didn't like changing out the tapes in the jukebox...he just let the incremental backups overwrite themselves.  dead servers + no backups!  YEAH!

he threatened to quit when they went to fire him and reminded them that he was the only one with the firewall passwords.  they promoted him to manager!!!

woooo by gzt (2.00 / 0) #5 Mon Jun 09, 2008 at 12:32:13 PM EST
Well, at least as a manager, he wouldn't be the one making the decisions about changing the tapes, right?

Bahrain (Bah! rain).  Highs in the 100s this week, and I understand that some folks have seen temps hit 140 in the passenger compartment of a C-130.

right next to Dammam. The humidity off the "Arabian" gulf is spectacular. I lived right here in Dammam for about a month. And I was detained by security right here on the AFB.

Good times. Good times indeed.

Did they close the schools? by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #17 Tue Jun 10, 2008 at 10:26:41 AM EST
They've gone to half-day sessions all over our area because the schools don't have AC. I can't remember them ever doing that before.

Some are closing by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #20 Tue Jun 10, 2008 at 10:50:42 AM EST
I remember in 79 we had so many snow days that we went so far into summer that schools were closing due to high heat. Eventually they gave up, and we ended up not getting the required number of school days in that year.
