Inside: Severe Weather, Stupid Police Tricks, McCain's Iraq problem.

So. Severe weather yesterday. Very severe. Historic, perhaps. The last storm that caused this much havoc around here was a hurricane. The schools are closed. Usually takes snow to do that.

I was driving home from work when the first wave hit. 60MPH headwinds, so I didn't even need to tap the brakes to slow down my Honda Element (which has the aerodynamics of a brick). Rain falling heavily, and horizontally. Then the trees started falling. So I pulled into the left lane of the Beltway (along with everyone else) so as to avoid being hit by a tree.Usually I worry about being hit by a truck on that road. The storm was moving so fast that by the time I got home it was mostly done.

A couple hours later the second wave came through. High winds, heavy rain, hail the size of canned hams of about 1 CM diameter. Near continuous lightning, like being inside a strobe light.

The third wave came right after dinner. Outside with a couple friends watching it come along. The sky was that weird green color, there was a very well defined wall cloud, and a bit of rotation. Very nervous making. Didn't see a funnel cloud though.

Fourth wave, around 8PM, was just a garden variety heavy thunderstorm.

Any of the four would've been a good memorable storm. All of them, one after the next, was impressive.

Office is about half empty, what with various people staying home to take care of the kids, or deal with property damage, or just cope with the power outages.

It's going to be in the upper 80's today, mid 90's tomorrow. With high humidity. Great time to be doing without AC... Perfect beach weather, however, and I will be at the beach this weekend.

ESCAPE FROM NorthWest! by sasquatchan (2.00 / 0) #1 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:09:03 PM EST
I dunno if he can buff out enough for the third in the series..

Yeah, folks called yesterday saying power was on/off throughout. All the fun stuff passed too far North of us, we didn't even get a sprinkle :/ Garden could use it.

Big storms. by ObviousTroll (2.00 / 0) #2 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:12:45 PM EST
I'll always remember running out into a storm that was raining so hard it felt like I was stepping out into the bottom of a swimming pool. The 5 days of no power were no help, either.

Has anybody seen my clue? I know I had it when I came in here.

What's the deal with midweek renting in OC? by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:20:33 PM EST
Any idea if there are places that do a few days midweek? We're tentatively scheduling an end of July beginning of August trip to Loudoun.

No idea by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #4 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:28:30 PM EST
I don't know if any places do less than a week.

Your best bet might be a hotel in Salisbury MD, or other place on Rt 113 in Delaware. Somewhere in or south of Georgetown.

horizontall rain by duxup (2.00 / 0) #5 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:35:55 PM EST
Sounds a bit like a microburst.  I went thru one once.  I was able to watch it from a distance (like a big column of doom approaching) before it hit us.

This was a straight line wind by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #7 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:55:36 PM EST
The wind intrinsic to the storm, plus the 60MPH (!) ground speed of the storm.

Dust by wiredog (4.00 / 1) #10 Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 02:35:48 PM EST
Lots of dust.

I lived in S Utah for several years. Dry, dusty, wind always blows. Was glad to get out of there.

I walked and drove through the exact floodwaters shown in the videos below last week.

Sorry, my mistake, that was just the BBC with some space to fill.
